My word of the day is balance, which for me is currently coming from diversity. Focus is good, but when all you have to “focus” on is a biege bedroom wall and the numbers on your powertap, that focus can quickly turn to insanity. I do my trainer time, but I also make a point to get out and look at the sky. I pedal plenty, but I’ve got plyometrics, yoga, nordic skiing, alpine skiing, touring, and potlucks on the menu as well. It feels awesome- like I’m becoming a whole-body athlete rather than this guy:

I was probably in search of some balance when I headed to Salt Lake City this weekend with some friends. On Saturday I rode my singlespeed around for a few hours in a blizzard, then went for a tour in the gorgeous Wasatch mountains on Sunday. The change of scenery was refreshing, and the balance really did feel like freedom.

Call it cross training or call it goofing around in the snow, I don’t care. I sincerely believe that what’s good for the soul is good for the mind is good for the body- and that’s what this is all about, isn’t it?
